Since Prof. Grace Alele-Williams broke the jinx by becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor in 1985, women have continued to soar higher in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, despite combining the demanding responsibilities of both motherhood and scholarly academic research.

With the way they’re reshaping the education sector, they’ve not only proven that the roles of women are not limited to cooking yummy meals for the household, but they’ve also become role models for the younger, shining female generation and the world at large.
Interestingly, they all hold an unforgettable record of being the first female VC in their respective university except for Prof. Lilian Salami, who became the second female VC of the University of Benin. Even at that, Salami aka “Headmistress” broke another record.

Two of these women on this list – Maureen and Ibironke – are also married to academic giants who served as Vice Chancellors in other universities
These mothers and academicians have convincingly shown that educating female children is worth the investment and should definitely not be relegated to the kitchen and inner room.

Grace Alele-Williams

All the Vice-Chancellors at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) from July 1971 to 1985 were men until a Professor of Mathematics Education Grace Alele-Williams changed the status quo, becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor both at UNIBEN and in Nigeria’s history. She would later become the first president of the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics
Grace Awani Alele-Williams, who became a VC at 53, began her educational career at Government School, Warri, before proceeding to Queen’s College, Lagos, and capped it with a degree at the University College of Ibadan (now University of Ibadan).
After her first degree, the young Grace at the time embraced teaching at Queen’s School, Ede (the present day Osun State). She celebrated her 25th birthday with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics.
By the time the resilient Alele-Williams turned 31, she had completed her PhD in Mathematics Education at the University of Chicago in the United States in 1963, making her the first Nigerian woman to be awarded a doctorate.
She worked briefly with the University of Ibadan before joining the services of University of Lagos in 1965, where she was promoted to a full professor in 1976.
Her research in women’s education and writings in teaching mathematics, including contributions to curriculum review in the old Bendel State will forever remain relevant, even years after leaving those significant marks.
She served on several boards of local and international organizations, including NESCO Institute of Education.
Prof, who is married to another Professor, died a happy woman on March 25, 2022.
Laraba Gambo Abdullahi

Prof Laraba Abdullahi is the first female Vice-Chancellor from Northern Nigeria and first female VC of the University of Abuja. She earlier served as a commissioner in Bauchi State from 1985 to 1990 under two military administrators: Chris Abutu Garuba and Joshua Madaki.
Ekanem Ikpi Braide

While Prof. Grace Alele-Williams holds the record of being the first female VC, the highly resourceful Ekanem Ikpi Braide, a Professor of disease control, holds the record of being the first woman to become a Vice-Chancellor at two different universities in Nigeria.
First, as a VC at Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) between 2004 – 2009, Calabar; second, as the pioneer VC at the Federal University of Technology, Lafia, between 2011 – 2016.
Like Oliver Twist, who always wants more, Prof. Ekanem was inducted as the first female president of Nigerian Academy of Science on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
Born on March 6, 1946, Mama Ekanem, now a great grandma, made enviable contributions to the eradication of guinea worm in Nigeria.
Her lecturing career with the University of Calabar (UNICAL) began in 1979 and rose to the rank of a professor in 1991.
She attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Cornell University, New York.
Comfort Ekpo

Prof. Comfort Memfin Ekpo was appointed the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo in 2010, becoming the first female VC of the institution.
The Professor of Educational Technology started as a Teaching Assistant at Cross River University from 1983 to 1991.
She faced some internal challenges towards the end of her tenure and stewardship at UNIUYO, but warded off any form of intimidation coming from some members of the Governing Council of the institution at the time.
Before her appointment as the VC, she had earlier held several positions as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Director, Institute of Education, the Acting Head, Department of Educational Technology and Library Science.
She is the Founder of Women In Total Girl Development (WIT-GIRL) a not for profit organisation that mentors girls.
Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu

Prof. Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu was the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after the Rivers State College of Education was upgraded to university status.
Born in 1956, the highly disciplined educationist remained the most victimized Vice Chancellor in the history of higher education in Nigeria to the point that she was kidnapped on June 18, 2015, when she was returning home, according to her 2018 account on how she was abducted by gunmen.
Despite the internal foes that tried to frustrate her Prof. Rosemund nurtured the institution to a university status.
Rosemund died March 26, 2021.
Ongoebi Maureen Etebu

Maureen Etebu, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Port Harcourt, was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan as pioneer Vice Chancellor of Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State in 2015.
Apart from being a female VC, Prof. Etebu is one of the few professors in Nigeria with a multiple PhDs.
EdubaseNG gathered that Maureen Etebu has three PhDs. Her husband, Prof. Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu, was also appointed the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) in 2018 (in acting capacity) and was later confirmed as the substantive VC.
Fatima Batul Mukhtar

Fatima Batul Mukhtar is the first woman from Northern Nigeria to become a Vice-Chancellor at two different universities and the second woman in Nigeria, after Prof. Ekanem Ikpi Braide, to hold such a record.
Fatima, a professor of botany, was first appointed as the VC of Federal University Dutse by President Muhammadu Buhari on February 14, 2016, the position she held till 2021.
Again, Azman University Kano appointed her on August 30, 2023, as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor.
Angela Freeman Miri

- Became a VC at 58
Angela Freeman Miri, a Professor of Oral Literature, gender Studies, and Creative Writing, was appointed the second substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State in 2017, making her the first female to have held the highest ranking position in the history of FUL.
Apart from her thought-provoking collection of poems, published by Malthouse in 2004, Angela headed two key strategic ministries during the first-term of the administration of Governor Jonah David Jang of Plateau State between 2007 and 2011. She was first appointed as the Commissioner for Health and later as Commissioner for Education.
Prof Miri had served on the board of several organizations, including being a member of the Jury of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Literary Competition.
Kaletapwa Farauta

Born on November 28, 1965, the strategic Prof. Kaletapwa George Farauta combines academics with politics.
Apart from being the first female Vice-Chancellor at the Adamawa State University, Mubi, Kaletapwa is also the first elected female Deputy Governor of Adamawa State.
Before her appointment as the VC of ADSU, Mubi, the professor of agronomy held other political positions, chairman of Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board and former commissioner of education in the Northern state.
Victoria Adaobi Obasi

Born on April 14, 1952, Professor Adaobi Obasi, was first appointed as an acting VC before her confirmation as substantive Vice-Chancellor by the administration of Rochas Okorocha, the first woman to occupy such a position in the history of IMSU.
The trained teacher was a former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs and Education Commissioner (2011-2013).
Chinedum Peace Babalola

Chinedum Babalola, a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Pharmacokinetics was the first woman to become Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan. She started her teaching career at the OAU before transferring to UI.
Lilian Salami

It took the University of Benin 35 years after the reign of Prof. Grace Alele-Williams for the institution to produce another female Vice-Chancellor in the person of Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami.
Salami was the first woman to become Dean, Faculty of Education, and later became the second female Vice-Chancellor of the institution. She joined UNIBEN in 1994 after briefly teaching at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
Salami’s doggedness and hard work yielded positive results during her stewardship at the Faculty when she increased the departments from five she met to 10 by the time she was leaving.
Lilian, a professor of home economics and nutritional education, was nicknamed “Headmistress,” by her students during her reign as a dean, “because if I saw you dropping a piece of paper on the ground or floor, you would pick all the papers that I could see,” she told The Nation Newspaper in a 2023 interview.
The energetic Lilian, who is already a grandma, combines the responsibilities of being UNIBEN VC and Chair, the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities (CVCNU)
Before her emergence as UNIBEN VC, where she competed with 30 other eminent professors, she was Director-General/Chief Executive of National Institute for Educational Planning And Administration (NIEPA).
Elisabeta Olarinde

Elisabeta Smaranda Olarinde was first appointed as the Acting VC on June 21, 2019. The Professor of Law is the third substantive Vice-Chancellor of ABUAD
Before that, she was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) after nurturing the institution’s College of Law to become the “Best College of Law” according to NUC assessment.
Apart from being a law teacher, Prof. Elisabeta Olarinde has also been a legal practitioner for over four decades, during which was a law researcher for the World Bank.
She is the mother of Nigeria’s popular On Air Personality Ifedayo Olarinde of Cool FM.
Florence Banku Obi

The University of Calabar produced its first female Vice-Chancellor 45 years after its establishment. Florence Banku Obi, a Professor of Special Needs Education , an educationist to the core broke that jinx.
Her previous roles in the institution such as being a visiting lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana (2004-2005), part time Professor at the University of Buea- Cameroon, and being the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of UNICAL prepared her for the once men-dominated exalted academic position.
She was promoted to a full professor in 2007.
Marietu O. Tenuche

Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche is a product of Political Science Department of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), where she obtained B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D
She joined Kogi State University (Now ) PAAU in the year 2000, where rose to the full rank of professor in 2011.
Before joining the university system, she was a lecturer at Kwara State Polytechnic, where she served between 1982 to 1992.
Adenike Kuku

Until her appointment as the VC of Kings University on January 1, 2020, Adenike Kuku, a professor of Biochemistry at the Obafemi Awolowo University, was in acting capacity as the VC of the private institution.
Ibiyemi Bello

Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, a professor of physiology emerged as the first female and the 9th Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU) when she assumed office on September 16, 2021.
Academic journey took Ibiyemi from the University of Ibadan to University of Lagos, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, Health Science Centre, San Antonio between 1994 and 1998.
At 43, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello rose to the position of a professor at the Lagos State University College of Medicine in 2007.
Before her appointment, she served in various capacities, including being deputy Vice Chancellor of LASU in 2008 and acting Vice Chancellor of the same institution at different occasions (July –December 21, 2010, and again from January 30 – October 31st, 2011) before she was appointed in 2021.
She deployed her leadership skill on assumption of office because LASU was just coming out of the VC-leadership crisis.
Stella Chinye Chiemeke

Born on March 1, 1963, Stella Chinye Chiemeke, a professor of software engineering and digital forensics, isn’t only a computer genius, but an astute researcher who made history as the first female Vice-Chancellor of University of Delta, Agbor, after its upgrade from the College of Education.
In 2009, she became the second Nigerian female Professor of Computer Science. Stella, a programmer, joined the academics in 1994 as an Assistant lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, University of Benin.
Some of the previous positions she held include assistant Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, UNIBEN; two times acting HOD at Computer Science Department, and later served as Director of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO) at the University of Benin. She was also the former Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwuashi-Uku.
Charity Aremu

Charity Aremu is a Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics. She was a former lecturer at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, before joining the Department of Agriculture, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara, where appointed as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Born on August 1, 1968, she told Punch journalist in 2022 that she became a professor at 39.
With more than 600 citations and over 50 published articles on ResearchGate, Charity isn’t just a plant breeding professor, she plants maize and vegetables for the use of her family and friends.
Nnena Oti

Apart from being the 8th Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Prof. Nnenna Nnannaya Oti, is another brilliant researcher and scholar in soil science.
One notable action that made her win the hearts of many Nigerians was her firmness as a Returning Office not to compromise the outcome of the governorship election in Abia state, when it was alleged that some powerful politicians tried to bribe her to favour their political party. She resisted their attempt.
Mrs. Oti, professor of soil science and environmental conservation, was a three-time head of department of soil science and technology at FUTO, former Dean of post-graduate school of the institution.
Although her reign is still facing a controversy regarding the manner in which FUTO ‘appointed’ a former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami a Professor, which some academicians, including ASUU, say didn’t follow due process that has not stopped Prof. Nnenna Oti from been referred to as one of the powerful women in Nigeria’s education sector at the time of this publication.
Maimuna Waziri

Maimuna Waziri is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry. She was appointed the first female VC of the Federal University of Gashua, Yobe State, in January 2021, becoming the third substantive VC of the institution.
She attended Bayero University, Kano; the University of Ibadan, and the University of Maiduguri for her first degree, Masters, and Ph.D respectively.
Between 1997-1998, she served as the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and later as the Commissioner for Commerce and Industries from between 1998 to 1999.
She began her teaching career at the University of Maiduguri before transferring her service to Federal University of Gashua.
Fatimah J. Tahir

Fatima Ja’afar Tahir, a Professor of Microbiology, was the Acting VC of Nigerian Army University Biu, Borno State , before her appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Bauchi State University in 2022.
She obtained her degrees at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, where she also started as an Assistant lecturer and rose the to the rank of a Professor, becoming the firt female Professor of Microbiology of the institution.
Enase Felicia Okonedo

Enase Okonedo, a professor of Accouting and Management, was a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Dean of Lagos Business School (LBS) until her appointment as the VC of the institution on January 1, 2022.
Prof Okonedo attended the University of Benin, IESE Business School, and the International School of Management (ISM), Paris.
Okonedo, a trained accountant, is on the Academic Advisory Board of Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
Adenike Oladiji

The appointment of Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji was ratified by the governing council of the institution at its special meeting held on May 13, 2022.
She had first, second, and PhD degrees at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). She began her teaching career at the same institution where rose to become a professor at 43 years old.
Folasade Ogunsola

Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is a professor of medical microbiology at the University of Lagos. She grew up in an academic environment having been raised by Akinlawon Mabogunje, an erudite geographer and a lecturer at the University of Ibadan.
She held several academic and administrative positions, including being the provost of the College of Medicine, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), and acting VC among others, before her emergence as the first female Vice-Chancellor at UNILAG.
Ibiyinka Fuwape

Ibiyinka Fuwape is a Professor of Theoretical Physics. She attended the University of Ibadan for her first degree with first class honors degree in Physics, second degree, and PhD.
She joined the Federal University of Technology Akure in 1989, where she rose to the position of a Professor in 2003.
Ibiyinka, a researcher to the core, has won many national and international awards, including the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award for Scientific Excellence, AUKNASE 2020 and American Physical Society’s Marshak Lectureship among others.
Born December 18, 1962, she was appointed the second Vice-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State.
Her husband, Prof. Joseph Adeola Fuwape, had earlier served as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) from May 2017 to May 2022.
Francisca Oladipo

Francisca Onaolapo Oladipo is a Professor of Computing. She was the former Director of Quality Assurance at Federal University, Lokoja (FUL) Kogi State.
Francisca, a former Head of Department of Computer Science at FUL, also served as the Director Research, Innovation, Consultancy And Extension at Kampala International University, Uganda.
She was also the first woman to serve as a member of the Governing Council at the Federal University, Lokoja.
Olayinka Karim

Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye

Prof. Bidemi Bilikis Lafiaji-Okuneye is the pioneer and the first female Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Ijanikin.
The institution was formerly known as the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, before the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu upgraded it to a university on December 30, 2021.
Born on February 2, 1972, Bidemi is a Professor of Health Education. She began her academic journey with a Diploma in Physical and Health Education and later a degree in PHE from Lagos State University (LASU) before proceeding to UNILAG and the University of Ibadan for her Masters and PhD respectively.
She has written and co-authored several PHE textbooks, including the recommended textbook “Physical Education for Primary Schools 1 to 6”.
Sa’adatu Liman

Sa’adatu Liman is a Professor of Islamic Studies. She joined NSUK in 2002 and rose to become a professor in 2017. She is the first female Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Omolola Irinoye

Professor of Community Health Nursing, Omolola Irinoye was a former staff Nurse at the University College Hospital of the University of Ibadan before switching to academics.
She obtained degrees from the University of Ibadan (first degree), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (Master’s degree in Nursing), andother Master’s degree from the University of York, the UK, and Ph.D in Nursing from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa in 2005.
Before her appointment as the Acting VC at Achievers on January 10, 2023, she was a professor of Nursing at OAU, Ile-Ife, where she had been since 1991.
Her appointment was rectified as the substantive VC on March 11, 2024.
Jacinta Opara

Her emergence as the Vice-Chancellor of Dominican University Ibadan is not only symbolic as the first female VC of DUI, but her academic profile was irresistible to the independent panel that managed the process.
Her appointment was ratified by the institution’s Board of Trustees on March 7, 2024, while her inauguration held on July 1, 2024.
Oyedunni Arulogun

Oyedunni Sofa Arulogun is a professor of Health Education and the second substantive Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Owode, Abeokuta. She succeeded Prof. Chinedum Babalola in November 2024.
Aisha Maikudi

Aisha Maikudi was first appointed as Acting VC of the University of Abuja on June 30, 2024, when Professor AbdulRasheed completed his tenure. In December 2024, the governing council of the institution unanimously selected her as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of UNIABUJA becoming the second woman to head UNIABUJA after Prof. Laraba Gambo Abdullahi.
A VC of a federal university should have at least 10 years experience as a Professor. She only had three years experience as a professor in her field at the time of her selection. The governing council of the UNIABUJA was accused of amending the selection criteria in her favour. She was sacked by President Bola Tinubu in February because her selection didn’t follow due process.
Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe

Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe is the first female Vice-Chancellor of University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo. She was appointed by the Governing Council of UNIMED in March 2025, but she will resume in April 2025.
