List of Vice-Chancellors of University of Abuja from 1988 to Date

The University of Abuja, established by military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has had seven Vice- Chancellors since its establishment on on January 1, 1988. The Vice-Chancellor of University Abuja from the incumbent down to the founding VC is listed below:

Lar Patricia Manko

Tenure: 6 February 2025 till date).

Patricia Lar is a professor of medical microbiology. She was appointed as the acting VC of the University of Abuja on February 6, 2025, by President Bola Tinubu after the sack of Prof Aisha Maikudi. Lar is expected to spend six months in office when a new VC would have emerged.

Aisha Sani Maikudi

Tenure: 30 June 2024 – 6 February 2025

Aisha Maikudi, a professor of law was the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the institution (January 1, 2025 to February 6, 2025). She earlier occupied the position in acting capacity from June 30 to December 31, 2024.

Abdul- Rasheed Na’Allah

Tenure: July 2019 – June 2023

Rasheed Na’Allah is a professor of comparative literature. The poet earlier served as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Molete

Michael Umale Adikwu

Tenure: June 30, 2014 – 2019

Michael Umale Adikwu was the 5th Vice-Chancellor of UNIABUJA. He is a professor of Pharmaceutics.

James Sunday Adelabu

Prof. James Sunday Adelabu former Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja

Tenure: June 30, 2009 – June 30, 2014

J.S Adelabu is a professor of Solid State Physics and the 4th VC of the institution. He was the first southwestern professor to head UNIABUJA.

Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub

Tenure: June 2004 to 2009

Nuhu Yaqub is a professor of comparative politics and an outspoken academic until his death on January 4, 2025.

Laraba Gambo Abdullahi

Tenure: 1999 – 2004

Laraba Abdullahi, professor of Analytical Chemistry, is the first female Vice-Chancellor of UNIABUJA and the first VC from the North. She was a former commissioner in Bauchi State. She is the second female VC in Nigeria after Prof. Grace Alele-Williams.

Isa Baba Mohammed

Tenure: 1988 – 1998

Isa Mohammed, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja, was a professor of mathematics. He was also a two-term chairman of the Governing Board of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He died on December 28,  2020.

NOTE: University of Abuja is now known known as Yakubu Gowon University, following name change announced by President Bola Tinubu on December 16, 2024, to commemorate the 90th birthday of Nigeria’s former military ruler Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
