Professor Adejoko Mufutau Waheed has been appointed the second substantive Vice-Chancellor of an Obudu-based British Canadian University (BCU), Cross River State.

Adejoko, a Professor of Thermofluids and Fluid Mechanics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), succeeds Prof. Maxy A. C. Odike, who had been in acting capacity since the private university was established in June 2023. The pioneer VC of BCU was Prof. Aderemi Aaron-Anthony Atayero.

Adejoko was a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at FUNAAB, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Education

Adejoko attended the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, for his first and second degrees, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering in 1990 and 1995 respectively.

During his undergraduate years at UNILORIN, he received an award as the Best Graduating Student and became one of the University Scholars.

Thereafter, he proceeded to Aachen University of Technology (RWTH), Aachen, Germany, where he earned a Doctor of Engineering Science (Dr. Eng. Sc.) in the same field.

In October 2008, M.A. Waheed was promoted to a full professor of Thermofluids and Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering by the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

Positions held

On January 1, 2014, he was appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). He had earlier held several academic cum administrative positions within the FUNAAB community, including Acting Programme Leader, Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research (IFSERAR), in November 2009, and was later appointed in February 2010 as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, a position he held until August 2010.

He moved from being HOD of his department to a higher position in April 2010 as the Deputy Dean, College of Engineering, and later the same year, he became the Director of Academic Planning in September. He held the position of Director till the end of 2013, and on January 1, 2014, he was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the institution.

Awards

Adejoko is a recipient of several reputable awards and recognitions, including the Commonwealth Fellowship at the University of Bath, United Kingdom, and a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship for his doctoral studies in Germany.

Professional membership

Apart from being a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Prof. Adejoko Waheed is a Fellow of notable professional bodies in his field of study, such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and a the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FNIMechE).

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages have continued to pour in from his alma mater and FUNAAB. One of the first persons to send a congratulatory message was the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde.

Babatunde described him as an outstanding academic whose pedigree, administrative competence, and commitment to excellence are worthy of emulation.

The FUNAAB VC expressed optimism that Adejoko “will bring visionary leadership and global best practices to bear in advancing the goals of the British Canadian University.”
