Monarch University Iyesi-Ota

Monarch University is a faith-based private university located in Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. The institution received its operational licence on April 30, 2025, following approval for its establishment on March 3, 2025, by Nigeria’s President.

History

The plan to establish the university began as early as 2017, when the campus of Royal City College of Education was upgraded to university standard.

Afterward, an application for the establishment of Monarch University was submitted to the National Universities Commission (NUC). The NUC came for inspection and made crucial recommendations.

On March 3, 2025, President Bola Tinubu, during a Federal Executive Council meeting, approved the establishment of Monarch University Iyesi-Ota, along with Minaret University, Isaac Balami University of Aeronautic and Management and others.

Upon approval, Prof. (Mrs.) Mopelola Omoegun was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the institution, becoming of the female Vice-Chancellors in Nigeria.

On April 30, 2025, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, together with the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, handed out the operational licence to the promoter of the institution at an event in Abuja.

Founder

Monarch University was founded by the General Overseer of Christ Royal Church, Bishop (Dr.) Tom Samson. The flamboyant pastor is also the founder of Royal City College of Education, Ota, Ogun State.

Monarch University Iyesi-Ota currently have four faculties, they include:

Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Faculty of Management Science
Faculty of Social Science

The institution currently have 11 academic programmes that cut across the four faculties:

Department of Accounting and Finance (with options in Accounting; Banking and Finance)
Department of Business Administration (with option in Entrepreneurship)
Department of Economics
Department of Sociology (with options in Criminology and Security Studies)
Department of Mass Communication
Department of English
Department of History (with History and International Studies Option)
Department of Biological Science (with Biotechnology Option)
Department of Chemical Science (with Chemistry Option)
Department of Physics (with option in Physics with Electronics)
Department of Mathematics
Department of Computer Science with options in Computer Science; Cyber Security, and Software Engineering

All the academic programmes lead to the award of Bachelor of Science (BSc) except History and Mass Communication, that lead to the award of Bachelor of Arts (Faculty of Arts)
