The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, are among the newly established higher institutions in the country that will benefit from the waiver granted by the Federal Government for the recruitment of academic and non-academic staff.
EdubaseNG gathered that this waiver will only apply to institutions that already have appointed principal officers and a governing council in place.
Even though the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, is among the new universities, President Bola Tinubu is yet to appoint principal officers and a governing council for the institution.
In our earlier report, the government charged FUMMSA and the federal university in Iyin Ekiti to commence academic activities by September 2025.
Ads Being Circulated Online
A search by the EdubaseNG team shows that an ad is being circulated online regarding a recruitment exercise at FUMMSA. The ad reads:
“The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences Abeokuta (FUMMSA) requests applications from suitably qualified candidates for the positions of Lecturer in Basic Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, etc.) and Sciences (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc.). Applications should be submitted through the Vice Chancellor for the above positions.”
We cannot independently confirm this advertisement at this time. However, we do know that the government has directed the affected universities to ensure transparency in the recruitment exercise.
Directive by the Government
A statement signed by the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Folasade Boriowo, says the Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, directed the institutions to submit their manpower needs to the Ministry’s Committee on Waiver and Recruitment for review.
The Ministry also instructed them to advertise vacancies in national dailies, on their respective websites, and in other relevant academic and professional journals.
“This directive aims to ensure a transparent, open, and competitive recruitment process that offers equal opportunity to all eligible Nigerians,” the statement read.
Our Thought
Going by the statement from the FME, federal institutions now have the power to embark on recruitment exercises, provided they follow the guidelines set by the Federal Government. However, we can’t say when the recruitment will officially begin and we urge prospective applicants to watch out for red-flags to avoid falling prey of dubious recruiters.
