The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will prevent you from participating in the one year service if you cannot provide evidence of the mandatory one year Industrial Training (IT).
According to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), one year IT is mandatory for students who have completed their Ordinary National Diploma (OND) before they are admitted for the Higher National Diploma (HND).
Presenting evidence of IT is one of the requirements before an admission seeker could be offered an admission for the HND programme. However, a recent finding has shown that some students have found a way of seeking admission into the HND programme without undergoing IT.
To put an end to the anomaly, the management of NYSC through Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa, Lagos State Coordinator of the youth service corp disclosed that polytechnic or mono-technics graduates who failed to provide evidence of mandatory one-year Industrial Training will be prevented from participating in national service.
She stated that NYSC headquarters had issued a circular to polytechnics and mono-technics and prospective polytechnic graduates, noting that “The directive will take effect from the next orientation camp, and we will not register any candidate who did not complete or undergo IT.”
She said the measure is aimed at promoting the sanctity of Nigeria’s polytechnic education system.
What does this mean?
You must get a letter from the organisation where you completed your Industrial Training (IT). It is usually titled, “To Whom It May Concern.”
See sample below:

The letter is usually concise, on the letterhead paper of your employer and with contact details of the organisation, and contains your name and the period you underwent the IT.
If you completed your ND programme in August 2023, it is obvious that you cannot enrol for HND the same year, that’s a red flag that you boycotted the mandatory IT.
Irrespective of the place you underwent the IT, whether the organisation is related to your area of discipline or not, ensure to get a letter from your employer whether it. You will not only need it to process your HND admission, you will also need it for NYSC.
One of evidence of IT letter sighted by EdubaseNG states:
“This is to certify that Joy Isa (not real name) worked with Edubase Media Nigeria as an intern between September 2022 to August 2023.
During her period , Isa was outstanding in the Quality Check Division of our organisation.”
Moving forward, polytechnic graduates will have to go to the NYSC orientation camp with their IT letter attesting that they underwent the mandatory IT programme. Failure to do so means they will not be allowed into the NYSC camp.
