British Canadian University (BCU) is a private university in Obudu, Cross River State, approved for establishment by the Federal Government on May 15, 2023. It received its operational licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on June 15, 2025.
Who is the owner?
It was established during the administration of the former governor of Cross River State, Sen. Benedict Bengiuoshuye Ayade, popularly known as Ben Ayade (2015–2023).
Although public documents, including those from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), such as the Status Report and Memorandum of Association, do not have any trace of the former governor, the ownership of the institution remains shrouded in controversy.
In March 2018, Ayade, who was the governor at the time, said it was a meant to be a a British/Canadian International School.
Investigations reveal that the true owner of the university is unknown, but a report published by the ICIR reveals that the Ayade administration committed state funds to the establishment of the private university.
The university, according to several reports, was founded under questionable circumstances when Ayade was in office as the state governor, raising suspicions of using state funds to finance a private institution instead of the state-owned university. Questions have been raised repeatedly about who the true owner of the university is – Ben Ayade or the Cross River State Government? These are some of the issues highlighted in a publication by Cross River Watch.

The present Vice-Chancellor of the institution is Professor Adejoko Mufutau Waheed, a former DVC (Academic) at Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
