Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has once again stated that the President Bola Tinubu administration has met the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The education minister stated that his ministry has also been directed to resolve the ASUU issues once and for all so that there will be no further interruption in the academic calendar.

He said, “The president has mandated us that he doesn’t want ASUU to go on strike, and we’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our students stay in school,” describing the last six-day strike as unnecessary and clarifying that talks are ongoing with the ASUU leadership following the concessions.

Change in negotiation strategy

Alausa stated that the government has brought negotiations with ASUU, ASUP for polytechnics, and COHESU for colleges of education under a single negotiating body for more coordinated talks and better results.

The Federal Government Negotiating Committee for Tertiary Institutions is headed by Yayale Ahmed, while the government has promised that the single committee will be expanded.

Alausa said the unified committee will henceforth handle dialogue with both academic and non-academic unions across all federal tertiary institutions.

He assured Nigerians that the four-week ultimatum earlier given by ASUU has been invalidated by the recent achievements made by the government in resolving the issues.
