ABUJA, OCT 22 – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria has suspended its two-week warning strike. The union has given the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to address its demands, which include improved staff welfare, payment of unpaid entitlements, university revitalization, and full implementation of the 2009 ASUU–FGN agreement.
The two-week warning strike began at midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, to press the government to honor the 2009 agreement with university lecturers. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, threatened to enforce a “no-work, no-pay” policy, but the lecturers dismissed the threat.
What does this suspension mean?
- If the Federal Government fails to meet these demands within the one-month grace period, ASUU is likely to resume strike action.
- Since its formation in 1978, strike action has been the most effective tool university lecturers have used to compel the government to fulfill agreements.
- Historically, the government rarely honoured agreements with ASUU willingly.
