Why the sharp increment?
While the state may attribute the increment to recent economic realities and non-release of Local Government funds, EdubaseNG found that the institution has been increasing its tuition fees consistently since the 2022/2023 academic session, even when revenues from the federal government flew into the purse of the state government.
In recent times, there have been concerns about the way and manner in which state-owned universities increase tuition fees, following the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which grants interest-free student loans to undergraduates in public higher institutions.
The new school fees have also made a civil society organisation in the state, The Osun Masterminds (TOM), plead with the state government to consider the economic plight of students from poor families.
The high fees also cut across all Osun-owned higher institutions, including Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, and the University of Ilesa (UNILESA), where medical students are charged as high as ₦1.3 million as tuition fees.
Returning and new students have taken to social media to vent their anger and plead with Governor Ademola Adeleke to make education affordable to the less privileged.
At the time of publication, the state government has not reacted.
