- UNESCO says TVET can equip youths with skills for jobs and self-employment.
- Workshop in Kano targets stronger capacity for TVET stakeholders.
- NBTE stresses TVET as Nigeria’s path out of poverty.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reaffirmed that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is a sustainable route to tackling unemployment and poverty in Nigeria.
The UNESCO Representative to Nigeria and Head of Abuja Office, Mendy Albert, gave the charge at the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop for TVET stakeholders in Kano. The programme is part of the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) III Project, organised with UNESCO-UNEVOC.
Speaking through the project’s Regional Coordinator, Manish Joshi, Albert said TVET offers more than technical know-how. “TVET holds tremendous potential—not only to equip young people with the right skills, but also to create sustainable pathways for self-employment and job creation that can drive socio-economic development,” he noted.
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) echoed this position. Its Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, represented by his Technical Adviser, Dr. Babangida Abubakar, stressed that TVET is “the surest way to take the country out of poverty.”
What is TVET?
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) focuses on equipping learners with practical and technical skills to meet labour market demands. It is seen as an alternative pathway to university education, with emphasis on self-reliance and job creation.
