  • UI pledges full cooperation with regulatory body

The University of Ibadan welcomed a seven-man team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for resource verification of three departments in the proposed Faculty of Computing and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter O. Olapegba, received the team on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, during a courtesy visit to the VC’s office. He stated that the university is committed to providing resources to ensure the smooth running of its programmes.

“Though the university is not infallible, we believe in doing things right. UI presents an objective picture of its operations while striving for quality at all times,” he said.

Professor Olapegba reaffirmed the university’s commitment to upholding high academic standards, stressing that the self-study items submitted by UI are intact. He emphasized that the essence of resource verification is to ensure that requisite human and material resources are available for teaching, learning, and research in line with global best practices.

He assured the NUC team of maximum cooperation and pledged that UI will comply with all recommendations from the exercise.

Director of Academic Planning, Professor A.E. Ayodele, explained that the exercise covered four programmes: Software Engineering, Data Science and Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He noted that the Department of Computer Science is not included, as it is due for reaccreditation next year.

Leader of the NUC team, Professor P.B. Zirra, clarified that the visit was for resource verification, not accreditation. He said the exercise was designed to inspect facilities listed in the self-study form and confirm the availability of resources to manage the programmes.

The visiting team included Professor P.B. Zirra, Professor Ighodan Igbe, Professor J.K. Alhassan, Tunrayo J.O. Laoso, Sympathy Ngalato, Dominic O. Chukwuan, and Grace Chukwuma.

Resource verification is an exercise by the National Universities Commission to confirm whether a university has the physical, human, and material resources needed to run a proposed or existing programme before granting approval.
