The wife of Nigeria’s President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will be honored with a Doctorate Degree at the 48th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, in Osun State.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Simeon Bamire, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday, December 5, 2024, during a press briefing heralding the lineup of programmes for the ceremony.
According to the VC, OAU decided to honor the First Lady because of the impactful programs she implements through her non-governmental organizations, Yeye Asiwaju Foundation, through which she advocates for “the underprivileged, particularly women and children.”
Bamire said Mrs. Tinubu, through her second NGO, New Era Foundation, is “focusing on youth development, environmental health, and community service.”
Mrs. Tinubu, a former Lagos Senator, is an alumna of OAU. Apart from supporting students and petty traders, she sponsors prizes in OAU’s Faculty of Education with N50 million.
During her recent visit to the ancient town in October 2024, she pledged N1 billion to OAU to support its horticultural landscaping and restore the aesthetic beauty of the campus.
According to Prof. Bamire, other exceptional Nigerians who will be honored with PhDs include the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Prince Karl Toriola; Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe; the Group Chairman of Mutual Benefit Plc, Dr. Akinade Ogunbiyi; and Daere Afonya-Akobo.
Daere Afonya-Akobo is the Chairman of PANA Holdings and the founder of PE Energy Ltd. He is also a member of the Forbes Business Council and founder of Daere Afonya-Akobo Foundation.
The OAU VC said Ogunbiyi is on the list because he has been able to provide jobs to more than 5,000 youths through his company.
215 Students Graduate with First Class
Meanwhile, 215 students of the institution graduated with First Class, 2,197 bagged Second Class Upper Division, 2,691 finished with Second Class Lower Division, and 755 are in the Third Class category, the VC said.
The programme of events
According to the program of events, Day 1 (Tuesday, December 10, 2024) begins with a Christmas Carol; Day 2 (December 11) is for the award of Diploma Degrees; Days 3 and 4 (December 12 and 13) are dedicated to the award of First Degrees, while the grand finale, scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2024, is dedicated to the conferment of Postgraduate Diplomas, Professional Master’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees by Research, Doctor of Philosophy Degrees, and Honorary Degrees.
