President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday approves a new Polytechnic in Abuja, naming it Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic.
Edubase Nigeria gathered that the new polytechnic will be sited in Gwarinpa District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).In a letter dated January 16, 2025, signed by Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, which was addressed to FCT Minister, Nyeson Woke, the new polytechnic “aims to promote technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial education in line with Nigeria’s national policy on education.”
The letter also requested the FCT Minister to propose suitable locations for both temporary and permanent sites for the new poly.
It is expected that a technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will visit the proposed locations when allocation is done by the FCT Minister.
Meanwhile, some residents of the proposed location have expressed delight over the new polytechnic, saying it would boost the economy of the area.
While speaking on the new poly, the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, said it would aid rapid development of the the area.
He praised Tinubu and the FCT Minister for making the polytechnic a reality. In June 2024, the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Banjamin Kalu, and eight of his colleagues pushed for a bill to establish Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. Nothing has been heard about the bill since June.
Tinubu is the first sitting president to establish and name a higher institution after himself.
There is proliferation of higher institutions in Nigeria despite poor funding of the existing ones.
Both state and federal institutions cry out of poor funding whenever the opportunity to do so arises.
