President Bola Tinubu on Friday, December 6, 2024, appointed Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu as the new Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Ribadu is a Professor of Veterinary Reproduction. He succeeds Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, who resigned from the NUC on June 26, 2023.
Until his appointment, Ribadu was a visiting professor at the NUC and a former Vice-Chancellor of two universities: Federal University of Technology, Yola, from April 2004 to April 2009, and Sule Lamido University, Jigawa State, in December 2013.
According to Chapter N81, Section 5 of the NUC Act, the Executive Secretary (ES) shall hold office in the first instance for a period of five years and shall be eligible for another renewable term as determined by the President.
This appointment gives Prof. Ribadu the powers exercised by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), enabling him to execute the policies of the NUC and oversee its day-to-day administration to help implement the commission’s objectives and goals.
Ribadu’s predecessors include Okoi Arikpo, Jubril Aminu, Yahaya Aliyu, Idris Abdulkadir, Munzali Jibril, Peter Okebukola, Julius Okojie, and Abubakar Rasheed. Abel Guobadia (1979–1981) and Chris Maiyaki (2023–2024) served as NUC ES in an acting capacity.
In a statement by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday, Tinubu also announced the appointment of Prof. Salisu Shehu as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
Shehu was a former Vice-Chancellor of Al-Istiqamah University, Kano.
