What You Should Know As Student Loan Portal Opens for 2024/2025 Session

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) opened the student loan portal for the 2024/2025 academic session on February 22, 2025, allowing undergraduates in government-owned institutions to join the list of existing education loan beneficiaries.

The application process remains the same, but if you are a first-time applicant, here are some key things you should know before submitting your application:

1) The 2024/2025 student loan application means that all applications for the 2023/2024 window have been completed. Loans for successful applicants have been processed and disbursed to their institutions. If your application was successful but your tuition fee has not yet been cleared, contact the NELFUND desk in your school’s student affairs office.

2) If you are in 100 level, ND 1, or HND 1, you will not be able to apply for the loan unless your institution has issued you a matriculation number. Hundreds of ND 1 and HND 1 students at Federal Polytechnic Ede are currently affected by this requirement.

3) NELFUND loans are divided into two categories: institutional loans and upkeep loans. The institutional loan covers tuition fees only and is paid directly to the institution, while the upkeep loan is a N20,000 monthly stipend to support students’ financial needs. You can apply for the institutional loan without opting for the upkeep loan.

4) If your institution fails to submit your data to NELFUND, your application will not be processed. NELFUND relies on institutions to verify students’ enrollment, making it extremely difficult for non-students or graduates to access the loan.

5) The application process, procedure, and the application URL remain the same. You will have to create an account if you first getting started. Alternatively, you can check out guide if you need help.

Meanwhile, NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr has promised that the agency “remains dedicated to providing financial support to students, ensuring that no deserving individual is denied education due to financial constraints.”
