At least 10 state tertiary institutions have submitted their students’ data to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a check by EdubaseNG has revealed.
The latest development makes it 138 institutions on the agency’s database, including Federal and State tertiary institutions. Students’ accessibility to the loan would be based on the institution’s responses.
While almost all federal institutions have been onboarded on the portal, the story isn’t the same for state-owned institutions as majority of them are yet to appear on the drop-down menu of institution at the time of publication (Wednesday, June 19, 2024).
Some of the state universities found on the portal are:
- Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti,
- Bauchi State University,
- Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero,
- Niger Delta University,
- Osun State University,
- University of Ilesa,
- Nasarawa State University, Keffi
- Gombe State University,
- Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, and
- Adamawa State University, Mubi
More state are expected to comply following the announcement by the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr in May that applicants in state institutions would be able to apply beginning from June 25, 2024
Recall that NELFUND opens its portal for undergraduate students at federal institutions on May 24, 2024. Their state counterparts fall under the second phase of the loan scheme while the loan agency said it would made public list of institutions with verifiable data by June 24.
President Bola Tinubu, had on April 3, signed the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024, into law, making it the first student loan scheme since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Through the scheme, successful applicants will get access to tuition fees and upkeep allowance. While the tuition fees will be paid directly into the institution’s bank account to avoid diversion, upkeep allowance will be credited into the bank account of the applicants.
Installment repayment of the loan begins two years after the NYSC programme.
