Meet Prof Fatiu Abiola Arogundade, the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of FUMMS Abeokuta

Early Life and Education

Fatiu Arogundade hails from the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. He attended Government College, Ketu (1978–1983), and Baptist Academy, Obanikoro (1983–1985), both in Lagos, where he obtained his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate and Advanced Level Certificate, respectively.

In 1985, he gained admission to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the institution’s College of Medicine in 1990. In 2005, he proceeded to the West African College of Physicians. Earlier, he had earned a fellowship at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), specializing in nephrology.

Career

Arogundade began his medical career in 1995 as a resident doctor at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State. He later traveled to Cairo, Egypt, for fellowship training at the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and subsequently underwent further fellowship training in the United Kingdom, including in Edinburgh and London. Since 2001, he has served as an Honorary Consultant Physician/Nephrologist at OAUTHC.

At OAUTHC, he was the coordinator of the Kidney Transplant Program and later rose to the position of Deputy Director of Haemodialysis and Transplant Programs.

By 2002, Arogundade transitioned into academia, joining the Faculty of Clinical Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as a lecturer. He played significant roles in various academic committees and, in 2011, was promoted to full professor of medicine.

Beyond his academic roles, Arogundade remained actively involved in clinical practice, leading to his leadership positions within the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN). He first served as Secretary and later as Chairman of the OAUTHC Chapter from 2011 to 2013.

On June 21, 2021, he assumed office as the 7th Registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), a four-year tenure set to end in June 2025. However, before the completion of his term, President Bola Tinubu appointed him as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on March 11, 2025.

Managerial Roles

Professor Fatiu Abiola Arogundade has held several administrative and academic leadership positions at both OAU and OAUTHC. These include serving as Deputy Dean and later as Chairman of the Faculty Research Committee at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. He was also elected as the President of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, among other leadership roles.

Publications

Arogundade has authored several academic publications, including collaborative works with other scholars in medicine. His research has been published in both local and international journals. Notable publications include:

  1. Determining the Association Between Severities of Periodontitis and Chronic Kidney Disease Severities Among Pre-Dialysis Patients, co-authored with Tolulope Ogundiran, Olusoji A. Onabanjo, Solomon O. Nwhator, Babatope A. Ogunleye, and Opeyemi M. Adewole.
  2. Kidney Disease and Its Risk Factors Among Nigerians: Report of the World Kidney Day 2022 National Screening Programme, co-authored with Ogochukwu Okoye and 13 other medical scholars.
