Profile: Meet Prof. Edoba Omoregie, The 11th Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN

Edoba Bright Omoregie, a Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law, on Monday, December 2, 2024, assumed office as the 11th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State.

Omoregie emerged on October 25, 2024, to succeed Professor Lilian Salami. Salami, the second female Vice-Chancellor of the institution, was in office between 2019 to 2024.

Who is Omoregie?

He was born on April 5, 1969, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. After completing his post-elementary education, he gained admission into the University of Benin to study Law.

Thereafter, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos State, and subsequently went for the one year mandatory national youth service. He was called to Bar in 1992.

Upon returning from NYSC, he immediately enrolled for Master’s Degree Programme at the University of Benin.

Academic life

After his Masters in Law, he joined the services of Faculty of Law of the University of Benin as a lecturer in January 1998. He completed his PhD in Comparative Constitutional Law with bias in federalism, election law, judicial review, gender rights and legislative governance.

Omoregie held several positions in UNIBEN, including being the Dean, Faculty of Law of the institution.

He was among other eminent Nigerian legal practitioners who were conferred with the prestigious Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2021.

Private services

Apart from being a practicing law, he was a former consultant to the Nigeria’s National Assembly on legislative drafting and process.

While on leave of absence from UNIBEN, Professor Omoregie was appointed as the Director of the Department of Legislative Support Services in the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) from October 2019 to 2024.

At NILDS, a postgraduate institution based in the Federal Capital Territory, he taught Legislative Drafting and Process, Legislative Studies and Electoral Legal and Regulatory Framework.

Professor Edoba Omoregie is a member of several law bodies within and outside Nigeria, including:

  • Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
  • International Bar Association (IBA),
  • Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel (CALC),
  • International Association of Legislation and the Federal Union,

Professor Omoregie’s publications have been published in local and international journals and platforms. Some of his research works include:
