President Bola Tinubu has named Prof. Isa Yahaya Bunkure as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State.
Bunkure, a renowned science education expert, was formerly the Provost of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, and later became the Vice Chancellor of the institution after it was upgraded to a university: Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Federal University of Education, Zaria, and the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, were among the four Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities by the APC-led government between 2022 and 2023.

Bunkure received a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in Physics & Mathematics in 1986 at Bayero University, Kano (BUK). He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Management from BUK in 1997, and subsequently enrolled for a degree programme at the same institution, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physics in 1991.
After his academic sojourn at BUK, Bunkure proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, where he obtained a Master of Education (M.Ed) in Science Education in 2008. In 2012, he was awarded a PhD in Science Education at ABU.
His areas of research interest include ICT in Science Education, Science Education, Ethno-Science, and Physics Education, among others.
In accordance with the institution’s governing laws, Prof. Bunkure will serve for five years as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria.
The President also appointed Abdurrazaq Nakore as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
