Osun State School of Health Technology (also known as OSCHT) established in 1977 is a health institution owned and funded by the Osun State Government to train health workers, leading to the award of diploma certificates in health-related disciplines such as Environmental Health Technology, Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW), Dental Surgery Technician, Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW), among others.
History
In 1977, the military administrator of Oyo State, Col. David Jemibewon, approved the establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ilesa, Oyo State. The College was under the supervision of the Secondary Health Care and Training Department of the then Oyo State Ministry of Health.
The establishment of the College was borne out of the need to have an institution that would specially train health professionals to meet the health needs of people in local areas, following the adoption of the Basic Health Service Scheme (BHSS) by the then military government.
By September 1977, the College commenced operations at a temporary site on Muroko Road, Ilesa, offering two major courses focused on the training of Environmental Health Technologists (formerly known as Public Health Superintendents) and Community Health Extension Workers (formerly known as Community Health Assistants). In January 1985, the College moved to its permanent site, Imelu, Ilesa.
Following the creation of Osun State on August 27, 1991, the College of Health Technology, Ilesa, was placed under the Secondary Health Care Department of the Osun State Ministry of Health. It was later moved to the Directorate of Primary Health Care and Disease Control within the same Ministry.
Satellite Campuses
In 1991, the College opened satellite campuses in Ikirun and Iwo. The Ikirun campus was designated for the training of Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEW), while the Iwo campus was dedicated to the training of Health Assistants. In 1997, both campuses outside the main campus were shut down due to paucity of funds and logistical reasons.
Name Change
On July 8, 2005, the name of the College of Health Technology was changed to Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, following approval and assent to the Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa (Establishment) Bill No. 2, 2005 by Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Earlier, the Osun State House of Assembly had read and passed the bill for the name change, which was sponsored by the Health Commissioner, Pharmacist ‘Lanre Afolabi, in 2004.
Becoming an Autonomous Health Institution
On April 22, 2020, Osun State School of Health Technology, Ilesa, was granted autonomous status following the bill assented to by the then Governor of the State, Alh. Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa (Establishment) Law, 2020).
On November 17, 2022, the State Government moved the College from the supervision of the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Education.
