The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially begun the payment of arrears from July 2024, when the new N77,000 allowance (also known as allawee) tied to the N70,000 minimum wage (plus 10%) was approved by the Federal Government.

The arrears will be extended till March 2025, when actual payments of the N77K allawee officially began. This means corps members within this purview will receive the N44,000 arrears.
According to the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the payment is ongoing as it is being disbursed in batches, promising that all ex-corps members from the time the minimum wage became effective would be credited.
In January 2025, the NYSC DG promised that the new minimum wage was ready, but corps members disclosed at the time that they were receiving the old allowance. The new minimum wage is to ensure that the government’s promise aligns with corps members’ stipends.
Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu said the government will fulfil its promise “within the budgetary provision,” saying banking details of those who have recently passed out will be used to credit them.

Why there was a delay – Youth Development Minister
Similarly, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has explained that the delay in the disbursement of the new NYSC monthly allowance was due to budgetary and administrative processes.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he said, “It’s a process, but the approvals are in place, and the payments are happening. Both current and outgone corps members will get their dues.”
Complaints from serving corps members intensified after the administration of President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of subsidy on fuel on May 29, 2024, sparking hyperinflation in the price of goods and services.
The majority of Nigerians, including corps members, said the inflation caused by the removal of subsidy eroded their purchasing power, with a corps member serving in Lagos in March 2025, Ushie Uguamaye (@talktoraye), calling out the president on social media, describing him as a terrible president.
