NUC approves 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian Universities

ABUJA, OCTOBER 22 | The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved new degree programmes to be introduced into Nigerian universities from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The approval, communicated to all Vice-Chancellors through a circular signed by NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, adds to the existing Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

According to the circular, the move is part of NUC’s effort to align university education in Nigeria with global academic and industry trends while ensuring continuous quality assurance.

The newly approved degree programmes are:

  1. B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence
  2. B.Ed. Classical Christian Education
  3. B.Ed. Human Kinetics (Sports Management)
  4. B.Eng. Geomatics Engineering
  5. B.Sc. Community Health Science
  6. B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
  7. B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance
  8. B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology
  9. B.Sc. Telecommunication Science
  10. B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
  11. B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management
  12. B.Sc. Nuclear Science
  13. B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering

Prof. Ribadu stated that experts from various Nigerian universities contributed to developing 70 percent of the components of these programmes earlier in March 2025, underscoring NUC’s commitment to strengthening academic relevance and innovation.

Universities have been directed to:

Circulate the approved CCMAS documents to all relevant faculties, departments, and academic planning units.

Develop the remaining 30 percent institutional-based curriculum component in alignment with NUC provisions.

Begin implementation of the new programmes after resource assessment, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The NUC Executive Secretary reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to equipping Nigerian universities with forward-looking curricula that meet emerging global demands.
