The Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan, and James Hope University (JHU), Lekki, Lagos, have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen research, policy analysis and innovation-focused training in Nigeria.
Highlights
- Partnership covers research, training, policy dialogues and academic exchange
- Institutions to jointly design executive education and capacity-building programmes
- Deal includes intellectual property sharing and strict confidentiality terms

The MoU was signed on Friday by the heads of both institutions, the Director-General of NISER, Prof. Anthonia Simbine, and the Vice-Chancellor of JHU, Prof. Austin Nosike, when the NISER DG paid an official visit to the JHU campus in Lekki, Lagos State.
The agreement commits both institutions to joint research, academic exchanges, and the co-hosting of policy dialogues aimed at tackling emerging governance and development challenges. According to the MoU, the two institutions can jointly pursue research grants and project opportunities.
Under the partnership, NISER and JHU will collaborate on evidence-based economic governance, innovation, entrepreneurship, and public policy. They will also organise conferences, seminars and knowledge-sharing forums connecting scholars, policymakers and private-sector leaders.
Both institutions agreed to design joint training programmes, including workshops and executive education courses targeted at researchers, policymakers and professionals. Faculty exchange programmes, research internships and academic linkages are also part of the agreement.
According to the MoU, all intellectual property from jointly executed projects will be co-owned by both institutions, while sensitive research materials shared during the collaboration will remain confidential.
The agreement, which takes effect immediately, will run for five years, with a possible renewal. Specific projects arising from the partnership will be guided by separate Terms of Reference detailing scope, timelines and responsibilities.
Both parties emphasised that the collaboration does not create a legal partnership but serves as a framework to deepen Nigeria’s policy research landscape and promote innovation-driven development.
