The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has witnessed its highest student application in 24 hours since the portal opened on May 24, 2024.
According to the Director, Corporate Communications loan agency, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND received 9,687 student registration in 24 hours, being the highest since inception of the higher education student loan in Nigeria.
The agency disclosed that out of the 9,687 student registrations recorded, 7,975 were completed applications, making it the “highest in one day since the launch of the student loan application portal.”
Why the surge?
While Oseyemi stated that the overwhelming surge in interest, “underscores the critical role that NELFUND plays in enabling access to higher education, for students facing financial challenges,” EdubaseNG observed that the surge came barely 72 hours after the management of NELFUND announced that it began disbursement of loans, including upkeep and institutional loan across some institutions in the country.
The surge could also be attributed to the fact that successful applicants are sharing evidence of credit alerts they received from the federal government, thereby ending months of doubts among Nigerian students about the authenticity of the education aid.
Recall that the Managing Director of the Fund Mr Akintunde Sawyerr a few weeks ago disclosed that the students from the Northern part of the country had more applications enrolment than the southern part of Nigeria.
The Fund is designed to cater for the academic needs of undergraduate Nigerians students who are experiencing financial difficulties irrespective of political and religious affiliations.
Although applicants faced some challenges on the first day of launch, the management of the Fund has now streamlined the application process, which is now user-friendly, ensuring that students can easily access the portal right on the mobile phone.
EdubaseNG has also observed that the team has stepped up its game regarding prompt response to applicants’ challenges and inquiries which have not been covered by its comprehensive FAQ page and its social media handles.
The Fund doesn’t only make Nigeria join the league of countries that make provision for their citizens’ education, it also shows the dedication of its leadership to higher education.
