The management of Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has directed students whose tuition fees have been disbursed to visit their respective institutions to confirm the payment.
The latest update indicates that applicants between May 24 through July 17, 2024, who fall under the first batch of disbursement with their loan application showing approval should check their status with their institution.
A few days ago, NELFUND commenced payment with applicants in six federal institutions, including the University of Ibadan, University of Benin, Bayero University Kano, University of Ilorin, University of Maiduguri, and the Federal University Dutsinma.
Recall that the aforementioned institutions, especially UNIBEN, UI, and BUK, released an update acknowledging the receipt of tuition fees on behalf of students while thousands of students from the same institutions shared a screenshot of monthly pocket-money they received from the federal government.
The management of the loan agency promised that every successful applicant with status “approved loan will be disbursed transparently and in a timely manner.”
It also admonished other applicants whose institutions are not included in the current disbursement cycle, but whose loans have been approved, to exercise patience.
“Your loans will be disbursed in the upcoming batches, and NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that every eligible student receives their funds,” calling on the student to constantly check the status of their application on the NELFUND portal.
UI VC hails FG over student loan
In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has described the policy of the government over student loans as visionary.
According to him, NELFUND would help alleviate students’ financial burdens, advising his students to take advantage of the opportunity and use it wisely.
Adebowale who was speaking during a sensitization visitation of the institution by NELFUND team at UI campus cautioned students about their personal and sensitive data from fraudulent individuals when filling out the online form.
Many scholars have described the education loan as a lifeline provided by Nigeria’s government to make payment of tuition fees easier for students.
While the NELFUND Head of ICT, Olawale Ogunleye clarified that the loan is a revolving scheme, UI’s Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu, promised that the premier institution would launch what it called a “UI Student NELFUND” page to provide answers to many questions potential applicants might have regarding the loan.
