Mohammed Laminu Mele is a professor of English and Linguistics and the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Borno State, North-East Nigeria.
He succeeded Prof. Aliyu Shugaba on June 3, 2024, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution, serving in that capacity until September 18, 2024, when he was appointed the substantive Vice-Chancellor by the institution’s Governing Council.
Early Life and Education
Mohammed Mele was born and raised in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, where he received his primary and secondary education.
He attended the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, earning a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons) in English Language between 1996 and 1999. He followed this with an M.A. in English and later capped it with a Ph.D. (2006–2009) from the same university.
Career
Mohammed Mele began his academic career as a graduate assistant in the Department of English, University of Maiduguri. He rose through the ranks to hold several academic and administrative positions within the institution, including Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Central Administration, among others.
After the expiration of the 5-year term of the immediate past VC, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba (June 3, 2019 – June 3, 2024), Prof. Mohammed Mele was appointed Acting VC, a position he held from June 3, 2024, to September 18, 2024.
During his tenure as Acting VC, the Governing Council conducted a search for a new VC. Prof. Mele was among the candidates who applied for the esteemed position.
Following its meeting on September 18, 2024, the Governing Council of the University of Maiduguri approved his appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Prof Mele is the third alumni of UNIMAID to become the Vice-Chancellor of University of Maiduguri after Prof Shugaba (second) and Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi (first).
Research Works
Prof. Mele has spent over 20 years in academia, with his research covering language, diction, and terrorism. His works have been featured in several reputable print and online journals, including Taylor & Francis. He has also co-authored many academic publications, such as:
