List of Vice-Chancellors of UNIMED Ondo From 2015 to Date

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) is located in Ondo Town, Southwest Nigeria. It is Nigeria’s first university dedicated to medical-related academic programs.

Since its establishment in 2015, the university has had three Vice-Chancellors. Friday Okonofua was UNIMED’s pioneer VC, succeeded by Adesegun Fatusi, whose tenure expired on March 9, 2025 while the a new VC, Adejuyigbe, will be resuming office in April 2025.

Interestingly, Professors Okonofua, Fatusi, and Adejuyigbe are all products of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Below is the full list of Vice-Chancellors of UNIMED, Ondo, from 2015 to date:

Friday Okonofua

Okonofua, a professor of gynecology and obstetrics from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), was the first Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED.

He has several years of research experience in public health and female reproductive health. Before his appointment, he was the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences at UNIBEN.

He is an alumnus of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he studied Health Sciences and Medicine. He later earned a PhD in Public Health and Population Health from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.

Prof. Okonofua is a fellow of several medical bodies, including the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Beyond academics, he is also a renowned figure in the theater ward. He founded the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC) in Benin City, an NGO focused on female reproductive research and finding actionable solutions to women’s health challenges.

Adesegun Fatusi

Before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor in 2020, Fatusi was the Provost of OAU’s College of Health Sciences.

He earned a degree in Medicine and Surgery at OAU and later obtained a Master’s in Public Health at the Hebrew University Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Prof. Fatusi is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and has served on several national health committees, including the Ministerial Committee that drafted Nigeria’s Health Sector Reform Programme in 2004.

Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe

Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe will assume office in April 2025 as the first female and third Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED.

She was trained as a medical practitioner at OAU, where she also teaches and serves as a consultant at the institution’s teaching hospital.

Adejuyigbe is a Professor of Pediatrics and a Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, United States.
