The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of under-age candidates who participated in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement on Sunday, May 25, 2025, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, clarified that the released results do not qualify the candidates for admission if they performed below the established standards, unless “litigation is involved.”
He also stated that the candidates had, during the process of filling the exam form, signed an undertaking that only those who met the prescribed standards would be considered for under-age special admission.
This announcement was made during the release of results for the rescheduled examination, which was conducted for candidates affected by technical errors during the 2025 UTME.
JAMB disclosed that 21,082 students out of the 336,845 candidates scheduled to take the resit examination were absent without providing specific reasons.
Recall that the initial UTME results were released on May 9, but the exam was marred by several complaints related to timing—described by some as scheduling exams at odd hours, with candidates being mandated to arrive at centres as early as 6:30 a.m.—and technical glitches experienced during the examination.
The Registrar of the examination body, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, had during a press briefing on May 14, 2025, burst into tears while taking full responsibility and apologising for the glitches. He disclosed that the results of 379,997 candidates across 157 centres in the “Lagos and South-East zones were compromised due to a technical glitch.”
He attributed the issue to faulty server updates, which prevented the proper upload of candidate responses during the first three days of the examination.
Waiver for Online Malpractice
The Board also promised to grant a one-time waiver for candidates involved in online malpractice by releasing their results. “The meeting emphasised that its decision is not an endorsement of candidates’ unacceptable acts, but rather a once and for all waiver.”
He advised candidates to desist from joining examination malpractice platforms on WhatsApp and other social media channels.
Implicated CBT Centres to Face Full Wrath of the Law
The examination body further vowed to prosecute Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres implicated in malpractice. In addition to blacklisting such centres, legal action would be taken against individuals involved in biometric or identity fraud.
Politicisation of JAMB Technical Glitch
JAMB also condemned the politicisation of the technical issues along tribal lines, following claims by a group in the Southeast that the glitch was targeted at candidates from their region.
“The meeting expressed with regret the attempts by some groups to exploit the unfortunate incident to disseminate tribal and sectional narratives,” Fabian stated, adding that such ethnic narratives could exacerbate existing divisions within Nigeria.
Checking the UTME resit results
Candidates are advised to follow usual procedure of checking UTME result by:
- Send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019
- Note: You must use the same phone number that you used registration.
- After sending the SMS, the result would be returned as a text message.
