Why did UNIMAID get as triple as what was disbursed to UI?

The difference in the disbursed amount shows that more students from the University of Maiduguri applied for the loan than students from University of Ibadan, hence the UNIMAID received N589,001,500 while University of Ibadan received N201,114,650 for the successful applicants.

NELFUND is a loan, not a free gift. So, if students from other institutions don’t apply, they won’t receive funds.

Why are the institutions in the Southeast left out?

Geopolitical zones are not a factor in the student loan disbursement process. Recall that NELFUND was updating the list of institutions that had sent data of their students, some complied, some did not.

NELFUND sent a verification list to every institution eligible for disbursement, but institutions didn’t respond. Payments are being made to institutions that have responded to this verification.

“Unfortunately, we have not yet received any response from the institutions in the South-East. We urge these institutions to complete the verification process so that their students can benefit from the scheme,” NELFUND says in a tweet.

This trend in the disbursement process and the dominance of the Northern-based institutions isn’t surprising to EdubaseNG and to those who have been following the update from management of NELFUND since the application portal was launched.

At a point, the Managing Director of the Fund Mr Akintunde Sawyerr said that students in the Northern region embraced the initiative since its student loan was launched, saying Northern-based institutions have also been complying with the guidelines of the Fund by sending data of their students to the Fund.

Besides, research has also shown that some students from SE who are undergraduates in institutions in other regions are beneficiaries.

Conclusion

We urge students in Southeast-based institutions to put persuade their respective institutions to verify them and comply with NELFUND guideline. They need to abide by the procedure the Fund put in place so that their students can massively benefit from the student loans like their counterparts in the North and other parts of the country.

Loan disbursement isn’t based on the political choices of the region nor their religion. It is an equal opportunity for all. It is a loan that will be paid back.
