Gov. Lawal seeks TETFund support for Zamfara State University

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State is seeking the support of  Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to complete some of the abandoned projects in the state’s tertiary institutions.

According him, the abandoned projects in Zamfara State University and Abdu Gusau Polytechnic were the ones undertaken by his predecessors.

A statement by his media aide, Sulaiman Idris, says Lawal made the appeal when he an official visit to the TETFund headquarters in Abuja.

He specifically stated that issued of abandoned projects at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic have affected the higher institution from getting some of its courses accredited.

“We’re experiencing issues with accreditation at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, and we need your support to resolve this,” he said.

The governor’s visit was not the first since assuming office on May 2023. He made a similar appeal to TETFund the last time be visited, saying, “I am here again to request additional support for some Zamfara tertiary institutions.”

He disclosed that he saw many abandoned TETFund projects undertaken by previous administrations when he visited Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state.

Lawal also highlighted the broader challenges facing Zamfara, including insecurity and unpaid salaries inherited from the previous administrations.

The governor who also spoke about the challenges he faced when he assumed office on May 2023, said students were unable to sit for WAEC and NECO because former administration owed the examination bodies while students who were on scholarships in Cyprus, India, and Sudan were abandoned.

He noted that his administration has since paid the outstanding obligations, saying TETFund invention is needed to rebuild tertiary institution in the state.

Congratulating the governor, TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, praised Lawal for his commitment to education in just one year in office.

Echono promised to review the request of the governor and do everything possible to support his effort, “Your diligence in addressing state issues is commendable and shows a high level of seriousness. I want to personally thank you for settling the WAEC and NECO debts.”
