The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), will begin its academic session in September 2025 and plans to admit its first set of fresh students into the Departments of Medicine and Nursing.
The new institution will temporarily use the premises of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), pending the completion of structures at its permanent site.

The Vice-Chancellor of the newly established institution, Professor Fatiu Arogundade, made this disclosure when the principal officers and the Dr. Usman Muhammed Shanawa-led governing council paid a courtesy visit to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Arogundade, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the pioneer VC of the institution on March 11, 2025, also stated that preparations are in top gear to ensure the seamless takeoff of the university.
Although he didn’t specify the number of undergraduates that would be admitted at the takeoff because of limited space, he noted that the institution will commence with programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, and Medical Rehabilitation.
NUC Verification Visit
As part of the preparations, Arogundade—a former College Registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and medical scholar—disclosed that officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) will visit the institution before September to provide guidance on the number of students to admit.
He noted that the available facilities will determine both the number of academic programmes and the student intake. “Definitely, we do not expect that FUNAAB will give us all their hostels or lecture rooms,” he said.
Call to Upgrade FMC to FUMMSA Teaching Hospital Status
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Governing Council of FUMMSA, Dr. Shanawa, praised the Medical Director of FUNAAB, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, for his academic contribution to the establishment of the second federal university in the state.
Shanawa, a former Medical Director of Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, called on the government to upgrade FMC, Abeokuta, to a teaching hospital to serve FUMMSA, rather than building a new one—citing paucity of funds.
Established on April 11, 2023, by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, FUMMSA is a specialised university focusing mainly on medical-related academic programmes.
