- We’ve released N50Billion to settle ASUU allowances
- We Are Yet to Receive Any Money — ASUU Counters Government
The Federal Government says it has released N50 billion it owed non-academic staff unions of federal universities for the settlement of their earned allowances.
The Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, made this known on Wednesday in a statement titled, “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority.”
A few days ago, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, promised that the allowance would be released as part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to “fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector.”
He described the release as not just a financial transaction but “our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them.”
Alausa, who conveyed the president’s message, said he appreciated the efforts of both academic and non-academic staff of universities across the country.
He added that Nigeria is “currently experiencing one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history” due to the mutual understanding and shared commitment between the government and the university community.

In the meantime, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has countered the government’s claim.
According to SaharaReporters, ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had yet to see any bank transfers at the time of publication.
“We are aware of the announcement, but until we see evidence, we won’t believe them. We only agreed verbally. We have not seen the money,” he stated.
