ABUJA | NOV 23, 2025: A Federal Government delegation led by Yayale Ahmed and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25, 2025, with a view to averting the looming strike by university lecturers.
The outcome of the meeting between ASUU and the Yayale Ahmed–led Renegotiation Committee will determine whether ASUU will embark on the indefinite strike it threatened earlier in the month following the government’s failure to fulfil its side of a longstanding agreement.
Edubase Nigeria gathered that a National Executive Council meeting of the union is expected to be convened by its leadership.
An unnamed ASUU NEC member was quoted by The Punch as saying that the government has been using delay tactics to avert the looming strike: “They are trying to delay us from taking action. After their meeting, we will hold a NEC meeting to decide the next line of action.”
Recall that the university lecturers had on October 22, 2025, suspended their two-week warning strike, giving the government a one-month ultimatum to meet their demands, including the review of the 2009 ASUU–FG agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances, and disbursement of the university revitalisation fund.
But the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has consistently said that the government has met the union’s demands. The government later launched an interest-free loan scheme for staff members of the university community.
The minister also disclosed that the government’s plan is to ensure that ASUU does not embark on a strike, “and we’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our students stay in school.”
