The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences ( popularly known FUTES), Iyin Ekiti, was established on February 20, 2025, following the signing into law of the bill proposing its creation by President Bola Tinubu.

Aim

The institution was established to integrate advanced technological innovation with environmental studies and preservation. FUTES will focus on key areas such as Sustainable Technology Development and Environmental Science and Ecology among other environmental courses. The university aims to address real-world challenges through disciplines like environmental engineering, climate modeling with AI, and biotech applications for ecological restoration.

FUTES will produce graduates capable of tackling global issues such as climate change and resource scarcity through tech-driven academic research aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

History

The bill to establish FUTES was sponsored by Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (2019–present), representing the Ekiti Central Senatorial District. The initiative to establish a federal university in Iyin Ekiti began in 2021, when Bamidele initially proposed a bill titled, “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, and for Matters Connected Therewith, 2021” according to CEO Africa publication. This bill passed its second reading in the Senate on March 16, 2021. However, the university’s proposed name was later changed to the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti.

Following this, there was little public discussion on the matter until the 10th Senate, where Bamidele, now the Senate Leader, reintroduced the bill for consideration on October 17, 2023.

The bill received accelerated approval, and on October 27, 2023, the Senate formally endorsed the establishment of FUTES, referring it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for further legislative action.

On February 20, 2025, President Bola Tinubu signed into law the bill establishing FUTES alongside another newly created institution, the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.
