The Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Ogoni, Rivers State, was established on February 3, 2025.
History
On November 26, 2019, a bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology, Saakpenwa Ogoni, Rivers State (And Other Matters Connected Therewith), 2019”, sponsored by Dr. Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East Senatorial District), was read for the first time in the Senate.
On October 14, 2020, the bill passed its second reading in the Senate. On March 2, 2022, the bill (SB.902) was read for the third time and passed by the Senate.
Finally, on February 3, 2025, President Bola Tinubu assented to the bill, officially establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni, in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Objectives
The primary objectives of FUET include:
- Training skilled professionals in environmental sciences, engineering, and technology to address oil-related environmental degradation.
- Advancing research and innovation on locally relevant environmental challenges, such as oil spill remediation in the oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta.
- Promoting sustainable development by integrating environmental technology with sustainable practices, supporting Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy, clean energy, and climate resilience.
- Preparing students to monitor, manage, and mitigate environmental degradation.
- Fostering community engagement to empower local oil-producing communities—especially in environmentally impacted areas like Ogoniland—through education, technical training, and partnerships to ensure community-driven and culturally relevant solutions.
Campus
On February 27, 2025, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced the release of Kira Campus, a facility of Rivers State University (RSU), as a temporary site for FUET’s takeoff.
