The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has proposed an extension of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme from one year to two years.
Dr. Alausa made the suggestion on Friday in Abuja when the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid him a courtesy visit.

The medical doctor-turned-politician explained that the extension would enable serving corps members to gain more from the NYSC Entrepreneurship Development Training programme.
According to him, with more time, corps members would be better equipped to become job creators by the end of their service year. He emphasized that the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition programme is designed to empower participants to become employers of labour. Alausa joins the list of Nigerian politicians who once called for the extension of the NYSC to two years
The minister also commended the NYSC for the proactive steps it has taken to curb certificate racketeering among some foreign-trained graduates.
In his remarks, the NYSC Director-General, who praised the minister’s leadership since assuming office, assured that arrears of the new minimum wage would be paid to ex-corps members who were in service when the revised wage bill became law in Nigeria.
