Deutsche Welle Opens Applications for 2027 Bilingual Journalism Traineeship

Deutsche Welle (DW) has opened applications for its 2027–2028 bilingual journalism traineeship, one of Germany’s most competitive media training programmes.

  • Application window: October 13 to November 17, 2025
  • Programme duration: January 2027 – June 2028
  • Training locations: Bonn, Berlin, and DW bureaus worldwide

Aspiring journalists can now apply for the 18-month bilingual traineeship offered by Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster. The programme, starting in January 2027, combines newsroom placements, multimedia reporting experience, and seminars led by leading journalism trainers.

Trainees work across TV, radio and online platforms, learning digital storytelling, data journalism and emerging technologies shaping modern reporting. The scheme also includes international placements in DW’s foreign bureaus in Brussels, Washington, Delhi, Riga, Jerusalem and Jakarta.

Participants receive a salary and, upon completion, may be offered a full-time position with DW.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be native speakers of one of DW’s broadcast languages with strong English and German skills. A completed university or professional qualification is required, ideally in fields such as politics, science, economics, law or technology. Previous journalism experience and familiarity with social media are essential.

Applications are accepted online only between October 13 (12 p.m. GMT+2) and November 17, 2025 (12 p.m. GMT+1). After registration, applicants will receive a confirmation email containing mandatory tasks, including a questionnaire and an application video. Both must be submitted before the deadline.

Only complete online applications submitted within the timeframe will be considered. DW will not accept submissions by email or respond to individual status inquiries during the selection process.
