Northern Nigeria’s first professor of broadcast journalism at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Ladi Sandra Adamu, has died at the age of 67.
She passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at undisclosed hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Until her death, Prof. Adamu was a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at ABU, the institution she joined in 1995.
Early life
Born on July 17, 1958, in Yaba, Lagos, she later relocated with her parents to Kaduna State, where she enrolled at the Army Children’s School, Ribadu Cantonment, Kaduna. She completed her secondary education at Queen Amina College, Kakuri, Kaduna.
Education
She earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mass Communication, with a focus on radio and television, from Columbia College, Los Angeles, California, USA. She also obtained a Master of Arts (MA) in Communication Arts from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California, USA.
She later pursued a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Development Studies at Mount Carmel Golda Meir Institute, Haifa, Israel, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Sociology of Mass Communication from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.
Career
Between 1982 and 1984, Ladi Adamu worked as a Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Nigerian Consulate, Atlanta, Georgia. She later served with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Jos, and The Weekly, before joining academia in 1995.
In 2014, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Broadcast Journalism, and in 2017, she became a full Professor, making her the first female professor of broadcast journalism from Northern Nigeria.
In March 2022, Ladi Sandra Adamu was named as a member of The Board of TheNewsGuru, an online news platform based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Final moment
Edubase Nigeria learnt that Ladi Adamu was on sabbatical leave and was preparing for retirement when she fell critical ill and died on November 12, 2025, in Abuja.
