ABUJA, Oct. 12 – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a two-week warning strike starting from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, to press home its unresolved demands from the Federal Government.
- ASUU’s NEC orders total withdrawal of services from all campuses.
- Union accuses government of neglecting key agreements and welfare issues.
- Education Minister earlier assured that ASUU would not go on strike.
The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision at a press briefing held at the University of Abuja on Sunday.
He said the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union resolved that the warning strike would be total and comprehensive, adding that “all ASUU branches are hereby directed to withdraw their services effective from midnight on Monday, 13th October 2025.”

A few days earlier, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had told journalists that President Bola Tinubu had ensured that ASUU would not embark on any industrial action. According to him, the government was in the final phase of talks with ASUU and other university unions to resolve long-standing disputes over welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
However, ASUU insists that the government has failed to act on its repeated demands. “It is evident that nothing concrete has been done to halt the implementation of the resolution reached by ASUU-NEC to embark on a two-week warning strike, following the expiration of the 14-day notice issued on 28th September 2025,” the Union said in a statement.
The 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement outlines commitments on university funding, staff welfare, earned allowances, and revitalisation of public universities. Disagreements over its non-implementation have led to several nationwide strikes by ASUU in the past decade.
