The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has disclosed that the Federal Government covers all charges and fees in Federal Technical Colleges, including boarding fees, exercise books, textbooks, ID cards, stationery, clubs and societies, medicals, vocational training, utilities, security, website/e-result, Skool Media, extra lessons, and insurance.
The aim is to ensure that no Nigerian child is denied access to technical education because of unauthorized payments across the country and to fulfill the mandate of producing skilled graduates for national transformation.
He said, “By investing in education today, we are building a stronger, self-reliant Nigeria.”
He warned that any principal or administrator who imposes extra levies on parents or guardians will face the full wrath of the law, stating that circulars reinforcing the new policy would be distributed to all schools and parents across the country.
The minister urged parents to report any illegal demands to the Ministry of Education.
“Parents are urged to report illegal charges directly to the Ministry via hotline numbers 0803 657 6733, 0803 637 3796, or email: tse@education.gov.ng.”
Who pays for personal items such as shoes?
The minister clarified that the government doesn’t cover expenses for personal items such as school shoes, uniforms for religious observances, bedding, toiletries, mosquito nets, cutlery, and other essentials.
He said the new tuition-free policy for Federal Technical Colleges is part of the drive for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver of human capital development.
“By equipping young Nigerians with practical and employable skills, the government aims to strengthen national competitiveness and economic growth,” he affirmed, adding that monitoring mechanisms are already in place to address infractions and safeguard the integrity of the free education policy.
