The Bauchi State Government has started local production of chalks and exercise books for schools in the state with the aim of saving costs, reducing substandard products being imported, and providing job opportunities for local workers.
“There is no point in going to China, and this development will phase out the number of undue, unqualified contractors that supply substandard materials,” Commissioner for Education, Muhammed Lawal, said on Friday during his visit to the production site.
The production site, which is at the state’s Education Resource Centre (ERC), will be supervised and coordinated by the Bauchi Ministry of Education.
He said the initiative received massive support from the state governor, Sen. Bala Mohammed, describing it as a great achievement.
The education commissioner said the state has ended the culture of “going to China, and this development will phase out the number of undue, unqualified contractors that supply substandard materials.”
He promised that the state may consider generating revenue from such production by selling to other states after it has been able to meet local demand within Bauchi.
Also speaking during the visit, the Director of ERC, Kabiru Ahmed, praised the state government and the workers for their zeal.
