The University of Benin, Edo, has acknowledged the receipt of Twenty-four million, Four Hundred and Twelve Thousand, Five Hundred Naira (N24,412,500) as payment of school charges to cover tuition fees of 332 students of the institution.
In a statement that was personally signed by the the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Lillian Salami and obtained by EdubaseNG, the VC stated that payment was to cover tuition fees of undergraduates who applied and data were verified by the management of Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND).
This UNIBEN’s statement comes a few days after the University of Ibadan acknowledged the receipt of similar payment for 1,370 students from NELFUND, an agency saddled with disbursing student loans to deserving students who may be facing financial constraints.
Prof Salami said, “The University Management appreciates the Fund’s consideration of our students’ applications and assures you of our commitment to the academic success of these students.”
While praising the laudable effort of the Federal Government, Salami promised to “raise the standard of the students and the tertiary education system.”
In a message on its X handle, NELFUND said the payments were first batch of institutional fees, meaning students whose applications have been submitted and verified should look out for more payments from the loan agency.
NELFUND was established to drastically reduce the number of dropouts from higher institutions because of financial difficulties. The Fund, which opened its portal for applicants in May 2024, is designed for students who are government-owned tertiary institutions.
