The Katsina State Government has shut all public schools in the state following attacks by bandits across the northern part of Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Jibia, announced the closure on Friday at the state capital.
The announcement came a few hours after terrorists invaded a Catholic school in Niger State, where an unconfirmed number of students were abducted and taken to an “unknown” destination.
Edubase Nigeria gathered that the state government took the decision as a measure to protect students and teachers while the state works on a new statewide school-safety strategy. The directive will affect students who are currently writing examinations.
“It is a temporary step that will remain in place pending a comprehensive security review of identified high-risk areas,” he said, assuring that “normal academic activities will resume soon after security assessments are completed and adequate protection measures are put in place.”
After the Chibok schoolgirls abduction in 2014, when 276 female students were taken by terrorists, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi and other Nigerian states have witnessed mass abductions of school children.
