ZARIA | NOV 13, 2025: Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, has set up a committee to review the current academic programmes being run at the institution with a view to ensuring that they align with national and global demands.
The 13-member committee, which will be headed by a Professor of Philosophy of Education, Raymond B. Bako, will, among other things, embark on a comprehensive review of the courses and critically assess their “current relevance to national development needs, global trends, and the strategic plan of the university.” Bako is the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, of ABU.
Edubase Nigeria gathered that the foremost institution swung into action following concerns that many of its academic programmes are at risk of losing relevance when compared with modern trends and current market demands.
The statement reads:
“The situation is reflected in the declining enrolment figures across several programmes and the limited graduate employability in certain disciplines.”
Other mandates of the committee include:
1) To advise on areas requiring adjustment.
2) To advise on restructuring or realignment in order to restore competitiveness.
3) To advise on industry responsiveness and attractiveness to prospective students.
4) To critically review all existing course offerings to assess their current relevance to national development needs, global trends, and the core mandate and strategic plan of the university.
5) To evaluate the structure, content, and duration of all academic programmes, ensuring coherence, eliminating unnecessary overlaps, and facilitating interdisciplinary studies where beneficial.
6) To recommend rationalisation of programmes, including the introduction of new demand-driven courses, the merging of similar programmes, modifications to existing curricula, and the phasing out of any programme deemed obsolete or unsustainable.
