Final-year students of the Department of Meteorology, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, on Friday mounted a guard of honour to celebrate their external examiner for what they described as his professionalism and humane approach during project assessments.
The unusual but heartwarming scene unfolded at the Department of Meteorology, where final-year students lined the corridor to applaud their external examiner after the conclusion of project defence sessions.
According to students present, the gesture was a spontaneous expression of gratitude for the examiner’s “balanced evaluation style” and “respectful engagement” with candidates throughout the assessment process.
One of the students, who preferred not to be named, said the examiner “treated everyone with dignity, even when pointing out errors,” adding that such conduct “motivates students rather than intimidates them.”
Faculty members described the act as a reflection of mutual respect and a recognition of ethical standards in academic assessment.
While the identity of the examiner was not officially disclosed, sources within the department noted that he was a visiting academic from a Nigerian university with a long record of mentoring young scientists.
In Nigerian universities, external examiners are appointed to ensure transparency and uphold academic standards during final-year assessments. Their role includes providing an independent evaluation of student projects, grading fairness, and adherence to institutional guidelines.
