The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has approved the appointment of Prof Mohammed Inuwa Umar-Buratai as Director of the Directorate of Advancement and International Education.

Prof Umar-Buratai, of the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, takes over from Prof Sani Abba Aliyu whose tenure ends on October 7, 2025. The new appointment becomes effective the same day.
The university said his “exceptional skills and deep contributions” to the ABU community informed the decision. His long institutional memory, understanding of the University’s Strategic Plan, and wide network with alumni and government officials were cited as major assets for the role.
In the appointment letter, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted Umar-Buratai’s expertise in grant writing, describing it as “particularly crucial as we move forward with our mission to secure sustainable funding through strategic resource mobilisation.”
The post carries a two-year tenure, renewable based on performance. The assignment includes clear terms of reference covering:
- Fundraising and resource mobilisation
- Alumni engagement and sustainable giving
- International linkages and collaboration
- Institutional visibility and advancement
- International staff and student recruitment
- Strategic planning and reporting
Prof Ahmed expressed confidence that Umar-Buratai’s leadership would “advance the university mission and secure its financial future.”
