Over 5000 UNIBEN Students Risk Exam Ban Over Unpaid FeesBENIN CITY, Nigeria, Sept 29 (EdubaseNG) – More than 5,000 students at the University of Benin, Edo State, may be barred from second-semester examinations starting Monday after failing to pay tuition fees, the institution said in a memo.
Registrar Ademola Bobola said the university would strictly enforce its “no payment, no examination” policy after repeated reminders to defaulters went unheeded.
“The university management is in receipt of the list of students who have failed to pay their school charges despite repeated reminders,” Bobola said. “These students have also failed to subscribe to the student loans being provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).”
He added that the university Senate had instructed provosts, deans and heads of departments to publish lists of defaulters by 8 A.M. on Monday to allow last-minute payments before the exams.
A task force headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) has been set up to monitor compliance, Bobola said. “Management expects full cooperation and compliance by all stakeholders to maintain the university’s high standards,” he added.
The measure is similar to a crackdown in April by Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, where Vice-Chancellor Isaac Zeb-Obipi warned students against diverting tuition money into gambling or other activities, insisting that only those who had settled fees could sit exams.
