Researchers from the University of Ibadan (UI), Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and other Nigerian institutions have been named among the world’s top scientists in a new ranking compiled by the Top Scientists Network (TopSciNet).
The annual list identifies the top 2% of researchers worldwide based on citations, productivity and overall impact within their fields.
Among those recognised are Professor Oye Gureje, a psychiatrist at UI; Professor Mayowa Owolabi, also of UI, in neurology; and Professor Shafiu Mohammed of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, whose work focuses on global health systems and policy.
FUOYE secured its place on the list through the work of four of its academics: Professor Olayide Samuel Lawal, Dr Adeolu Adesoji Adediran, Professor Bukola Olalekan Bolaji and Professor Basiru Olaitan Ajiboye.
The acting vice-chancellor of FUOYE, Professor Olubunmi Shittu, said the recognition brought international visibility to the university and would motivate young academics across Nigeria.
The TopSciNet ranking is updated each year and assesses millions of researchers worldwide across multiple disciplines, using standardised citation data and metrics.
