President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and other relevant education regulatory bodies to identify and clamp down on individuals and institutions issuing fake certificates in the country.
He also vowed that fake institutions will have no place in Nigeria, as their activities threaten the integrity of the nation’s education system.
The president, who was represented by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu, made this known on Saturday during the 14th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja.
He said his administration would not stand by while those he described as “certificate millers” continue to undermine the credibility of the education sector.
He further assured that his government is committed to strengthening the integration of all agencies involved in the administration of education to enhance efficiency and quality.
Two notable Nigerians were honoured with honorary degrees: the President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.
A total of 41 inmates from correctional centres across the country bagged first degrees, while 10 earned postgraduate degrees.
